Front-end editing in TYPO3
A number of initiatives to get modern front-end editing into TYPO3 have seen the light of day these past years. The integration of the Aloha editor in TYPO3 was one of the most visible ones.
Pixelant launched a crowdfunding campaign to add inline editing to the core of TYPO3.
TYPO3 currently uses a fork of, the long ago abandoned RTE HTMLarea, as backend editor. It has been maintained as a separate project for the past years as a system extension of the TYPO3 core, mostly by Stanislas Roland.
The core team had a visit from Fred Knabben of the CKEditor project during the Developer Days 2015 in Nuremberg. It was then that the basis was laid down to replace the current backend editor with CKEditor. Besides being a very modern implementation, the project also has a lot of support from the projects that implement CKEditor. Most of the current popular open source cms-es use it either in the core or as an extension.

As it happens CK editor also features excellent front-end editing capabilities and it seems only logical to implement it in the front-end as well.
Editing should be easy
The current TYPO3 releases have the editor in mind and focus on a user friendly interface. Pixelant has the vision that editing should be easy. No-one will disagree with that vision. This project adds cutting edge features that will smoothen the editing experience, make it faster and more intuitive.
Because this integration is not an easy task Pixelant started a crowdfunding campaign to get the necessary budget together. The budget needed to accomplish all tasks is 50.000 euro’s.

The goal of the campaign is to raise €50,000. The money will be used as follows:
- €25,000 — Basic implementation
- €35,000 — Drag and drop new content elements
- €40,000 — SEO / Accessibility scoring
- €45,000 — Backport to TYPO3 7.6
- €50,000 — Workspaces support
All work will be done together with the TYPO3 Core Team to ensure it is aligned with the TYPO3 CMS´s roadmap and features.
